Comments:

I was engaged my senior year and married in 1971 when my fiancee returned from Viet Nam. We lived in New Jersey for 2 years while he went to school and then moved back to Irving until 1975. We then moved to Grapevine where we raised our family. We were married for 23 years and parted friends in 1993. After divorcing, I moved to Fort Worth. I remarried in 2004 and my current husband and I built a house in the country. I have two grown daughters and no grandkids (YET!). I work for the hospital in downtown Fort Worth in the Executive offices and love my job and my boss.

I have remained friends with a lot of our classmates. The reunions have helped me stay connected. And I have been to all the past reunions because I have served on the committees.

School Story:

My fiancee left me his convertable when he got orders to go to Viet Nam. This was my senior year and I hauled anyone and everyone that wanted a ride all over town in that car. Right before he got home from his training (before he shipped out) I hit a parked car and really did some damage to his convertable. He was great about it.

I remember going over to Linda Reyes' house and her sisters tried to teach me to dance - I never got it.

After we moved to Grapevine, I learned that Vickie Eckhardt Mathews lived in my neighborhood and her boys went to school with my two girls and we served on the PTA Board together for years.

My girls also took dance lessons for years from none other than Terri Speer at The Dance Workshop.

High school was a blur - it went by so quickly - and now that I look back, I wish I had stopped and smelled the roses more.

Linda Mangum Hastings has left an In Memory comment for Mort Ewing.
Feb 23, 2015 at 12:34 PM

This was sent to the Website via Ron Reynolds:

"I guess I found out about Mort at the 1990 reunion.  I asked about him and Laurie Rolf told me he had been killed in an auto accident in west Texas.  I was absolutely shocked.  We had been good friends in elementary school and I was really disappointed when his family moved to Roswell before we started junior high.  I went to visit him once and he had great stories about the popular dating venue in Roswell…the local cemetery.  Apparently you would take your date and some other couples and tell ghost stories.  I told him I didn’t get it.  He said that the cemetery and the ghost stories would encourage the girls to hold on tight to their dates. J

I guess he and his family moved back to Irving our sophomore or junior year.  We were friendly but time and relationships move on fast at that age.  I did not see him again until late ’74, early ’75.  We were both at UNT.  He was working on his master’s and DJ’d part time for the UNT radio station.  I don’t know if you remember but he had an outstanding radio/tv voice.  We actually roomed together for about 3 months in this falling down house in Denton (cheap).  We were a terrible influence on each other.  At the time, he liked to drink rye whiskey in coffee and I just liked to drink.  We actually tried an all beer diet and that lasted a little over seven days when I bailed out and told him I couldn’t handle it.  After I Kay and I started dating, she always wanted to meet him because whenever she called or saw me and I was under the influence, it was invariably because Mort and I had been out at a bar or over at someone’s apartment.  She never did meet him.  I finished UNT in May ‘76 and got married in June and that was the last time I saw Mort.  Give me some time to think about it and I will post some stories about him.

By the way, Mort is buried at Oak Grove Memorial Park in Irving.  And that is the way I found when he died.  My mother was in bad health the last couple of years and before she died last November, I entertained her sometimes by finding out what happened to some of the people I grew up with.  I was looking at one of the websites where someone has mapped the grave plots at various cemeteries and decided to look at Irving.  Lo and behold, there was Mort Ewing, Jr.  Also, his mom died in 2011 and his dad died in 2012; I think his dad was 93 or 94.  I am pretty sure his brother and sister, both younger, are still alive."
